Leaders’ plans for day 17
On day 17 of the federal election campaign, The Canadian Press reports that NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is in British Columbia where he will make an announcement in Coquitlam and later attend an event at his campaign office in Burnaby. Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau is in Ottawa and will make an announcement in Kanata. Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole is in Ottawa where he will make an announcement and later hold a telephone town hall for residents of Atlantic Canada.
VRCA moves awards gala to January 2022
The Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) has moved its Awards of Excellence in-person gala date from Oct. 19, 2021 to Jan. 19, 2022, citing continued concerns over COVID-19. An email from the VRCA noted in line with B.C. government public health orders proof of full vaccination will be required to attend the gala.
Small businesses add to COVID-related debt
Small business debt has not abated since the beginning of the year, with businesses that have taken on COVID-related debt owing an average of nearly $170,000, according to a new report released today by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB). In total, the CFIB estimates that small businesses in Canada now owe a collective $139 billion due to COVID-19, a slight increase from the estimated $135 billion in February of this year. Three quarters (76 per cent) of small businesses that took on debt say that it will take more than a year to repay.
