OTTAWA — The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) is calling for applications for Canadian projects to participate in an immersive two-year program for developers and designers working on near-net zero developments in new or existing Canadian buildings over 25,000 square feet.
Up to 10 projects from across the country will be accepted to the program. Pilots must present an approved project with the intent to design or develop a near-net zero building over the next two years and be willing to be evaluated using the five key components from the CaGBC’s zero carbon framework.
The five key components are a greenhouse gas intensity metric for assessing a building’s emissions; energy intensity metrics; a peak energy demand metric; an embodied carbon metric; and renewable energy generated on-site or procured directly in order to offset emissions and ensure the addition of clean power generation, explains a release.
Pilot programs have access to four CaGBC technical expert sessions with two per year.
Participants can also receive industry promotion and participate as a highlighted case study at the CaGBC Zero Carbon Summit on May 30, 2017.
The summit is part of the Building Lasting Change national conference in Vancouver.
"With the Zero Carbon Initiative, we are demonstrating our commitment to advancing low carbon building design and retrofit in Canada," CaGBC president and CEO Thomas Mueller said in a statement.
"This pilot program is specifically designed to recognize excellence and leadership in the field, and continue to drive innovation in the Canadian green building industry. We know that zero carbon buildings are a crucial component in getting to Canada’s climate change targets by 2030."
