TORONTO — Young Construction Leaders (YCL) recently participated in this year’s Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) Team Up Challenge and took home the top spot for a good cause.
YCL raised just over $50,000 in pledges for Camp Trillium, a camp for kids living with cancer and their families. It was the biggest contribution from any single group at the event this year.
Seven YCL teams participated in the hockey, basketball and soccer tournament.
"I couldn’t be prouder of the YCL teams that contributed to this year’s Team Up Challenge," said YCL chair Matt Henderson in a statement. "All of our YCL participants worked hard to raise money for this wonderful cause and had a great time doing it."
Having been involved in the annual event last year, members of YCL were even more determined to make an impact through the challenge this year, reads the release. The top three teams — Tucker HiRise, Harbinger Network Inc. and Ledcor Group — all raised in excess of $8,000.
Participants at the challenge had the opportunity to compete at Downsview Park and HoopDome.
To compete in the tournament, teams of eight to 10 participants had to reach a minimum fundraising target of $5,000.
The Trillium Childhood Cancer Support Centre offers and promotes recreational experiences to bring children with cancer and their families together, adds the release. Each team participating in the challenge is paired with a Camp Trillium family who serves as their honorary coaches to motivate them throughout their fundraising and cheer for them on game day.
"The teams from Young Construction Leaders made a significant impact on the success of the MLSE Team Up Challenge," said MLSE Foundation executive director Michael Bartlett. "Their determination to help Camp Trillium kids and their families was gratefully received and truly inspiring."
