Upgrades to the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel are nearly finished, and will allow the corporation to reduce energy use.
The tunnel, which opened in 1930 and is jointly owned by the cities of Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, is operated under two separate agreements by Detroit and Canada Tunnel Corp.
In addition to an expanded secondary inspection area for U.S. Customs and Border Protection on the Detroit side, the tunnel converted from full-transverse ventilation to semi-transverse ventilation, which officials say will reduce operating energy costs by 50 per cent.
It is also installing a tunnel roadway lighting system, which uses the Cooper Valet LED luminaire fixtures.
“As a result, over the next 10 years, the Detroit Windsor Tunnel will save more than $1.18 million dollars in energy costs,” chief executive officer Neal Belitsky stated in a press release.
