WHITBY, ONT. — The new 500,000-square-foot GO Transit Whitby Rail Maintenance Facility is within two months of completion, Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation announced.
Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca toured the new facility with Phil Verster, president and CEO of Metrolinx, and other dignitaries on Oct. 13, a media statement indicated.The facility is on schedule to be completed by the end of 2017 and will include maintenance, repair, cleaning and tracks and storage space for 13 trains, expandable to up to 22 trains. Work at the facility will support between 300 and 400 local jobs.
The project is valued at $859.2 million, including $764.4 million from the province and $94.8 million from the federal government through the P3 Canada Fund. Construction began in March of 2015. At the peak of construction activity, approximately 1,000 workers were involved in the project.
Plenary Infrastructure ERMF is delivering the project on a design, build, finance and maintain contract. Peter Kiewit Infrastructure Co., Kiewit Canada Development Corp., Bird Design-Build Construction Inc. and Bird Capital Limited Partnership were the constructors; design was by Stantec Consulting and Arup Canada Inc.; and facilities management will be handled by Honeywell Limited and Toronto Terminals Railway. The facility will be owned and operated by Metrolinx.
The facility is being constructed to achieve LEED Gold certification. The roof will use reflective materials to reduce heat absorption and a rainwater harvesting and recycling system will provide water to wash stations and flush fixtures.
