TORONTO — Improvements are being made to GO rail stations across the province, including Union Station in Toronto, and across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).
Enhancements to Union Station include construction of a new, wider platform with a roof to protect commuters from the elements as well as a concourse area beneath the platform. A new emergency power system will allow lights, digital signs and public announcement systems to run in the event of a power outage, states a release issued by the Ministry of Transportation.
Infrastructure Ontario, in collaboration with Metrolinx, is leading the procurement of the Union Station Enhancement project. Prequalified bidders have now been selected that can submit proposals to design, build and finance the first phase. The prequalified teams are EllisDon Infrastructure Transit and Graham Construction Rail Solutions.
In addition, the province is moving forward with early works at multiple GO rail stations in the GTHA as part of the GO Regional Express Rail (RER) plan.
These early works will support secure bike parking and electric vehicle charging stations as well as more trips for more riders, adds the release. A request for qualifications has been issued for the RER — Early Stations’ Improvement project.
The province is investing $21.3 billion to transform the GO network from a commuter transit system to a regional rapid transit system. GO RER involves more than 500 separate projects across 40 municipalities, the release adds.
