Port Perry hospital to remain under construction until 2018

PORT PERRY, ONT. — Reconstruction efforts at Lakeridge Health Port Perry hospital will take until at least late spring or summer 2018 following a rooftop fire on Aug. 25 that resulted in $10 million in damages.

According to a release, engineering, construction, environmental services and electrical experts visited the site to assess and review the damage in order to come up with preliminary options for the hospital’s restoration.

It was determined that a multitude of building systems all sustained significant damage as a result of the blaze, which has left the hospital closed to the public.

The release states construction crews are already onsite beginning to clear debris and damage.

Township of Scugog Fire Chief Mark Berney previously stated that the cause of the fire was determined to be a hot tar roofing application process that ignited nearby insulation. The Ministry of Labour was called in to investigate.

The hospital was evacuated shortly after the fire was discovered and has since remained closed. Staff and patients have been relocated to nearby hospitals and facilities in Durham Region.
