OTTAWA — The Ministry of Labour issued several work orders after a portion of shotcrete fell onto a construction zone at the the Ottawa Light Rail Transit (LRT) project. Three construction workers trapped as a result.
The ministry was contacted after 5 p.m. on Nov. 10 with a report that a section of the LRT tunnel had been damaged at the corner of Laurier and Waller Streets. Police reported that three construction workers were trapped but subsequently freed. Reports were that the injuries were relatively minor and that one worker may have suffered a broken hand. Subsequent reports indicated one worker required stitches but the injuries were not critical.
Police reported that the incident occurred while the tunnel walls were being reinforced with rebar.
After initial investigations, the ministry issued two requirements to the primary contractor, OLRT Constructors, to not disturb the scene and to provide pertinent documentation. One requirement was issued to Hardrock Concrete Inc., a secondary employer, to also provide documentation.
Further orders issued Nov. 11 to OLRT Constructors were to ensure rebar mats were able to support or resist all loads and to provide documentation regarding the rebar mats and shotcrete. One requirement was issued for drawings, designs and testing inspections.
A report from Nov. 12 indicated that work was set to resume after conditions were met by the contractor. The consortium Rideau Transit Group Partnership, with SNC-Lavalin the key player, is building the $2-billion LRT line with a finish date projected for 2018.
