TORONTO — An expert in the safety culture and climate of construction workplaces will share findings from her extensive research in the U.S. construction sector and highlight the practical tools that have been developed to improve safety and health outcomes.
Dr. Linda Goldenhar, director of research and evaluation at The Center for Construction Research and Training in Silver Spring, Md., is this year’s speaker at the Institute for Work and Health’s (IWH) annual Alf Nachemson Memorial Lecture.
The lecture, billed High-hazard industries: Addressing safety culture, climate and leadership to improve outcomes, will take place Nov. 1 in Toronto.
Targeting high-hazard sectors is one of the strategic workplace health and safety priorities of the Ontario Ministry of Labour. One of those sectors is construction, which accounts for about 30 per cent of all occupational injury and disease fatalities in the province, while accounting for about seven per cent of the province’s employment, states a release issued by the IWH.
The lecture and reception is free, but registration is required. It will take place at the Design Exchange on the second floor, located at 234 Bay St. in Toronto. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and the lecture is at 5 p.m., followed by a reception at 6 p.m.
