Walsh Canada wins pair of safety awards

TORONTO — Walsh Canada received two awards from the Canadian Occupational Health and Safety magazine as part of Canada’s Safest Employers awards, an annual cross-Canada competition recognizing occupational health and safety leaders.

Walsh Canada vice-president and business group leader Craig Lesurf and health and safety manager Dave Irwin received the honours, which include the Silver Award for the Building and Construction category and the Silver Award for Young Worker Safety.

The Building and Construction Silver Award recognized Walsh Canada for demonstrating excellence in its overall health and safety program and culture, highlighted by Walsh’s outstanding health and safety record, its leadership role in promoting health and safety across the industry through initiatives such as Safety Week, Safety Month and the League of Champions, states a release issued by Walsh Canada.

The Young Worker Silver Award was presented to Walsh for its heightened focus on keeping its young workers safe, highlighted by its graduated Yellow Hard Hat program, Young Worker Mentoring Program and a minimum ratio of experienced-to-young workers on project sites. Walsh also supported industry-wide young worker initiatives that included MySafeWork and Courageous, while also founding a new annual bursary in 2017 for George Brown College’s Construction and Engineering Technologies program named the Walsh Canada Bursary for Safety and Academic Excellence, adds the release.
