Construction is beginning on a new community in the West Don Lands region of Toronto, which will be used for the Athletes’ Village for the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games.

More than 10,000 athletes and officials participating in the Games will use the community as a temporary home. Following the Games, the West Don Lands will boast new condominiums, affordable housing, a YMCA recreation centre and George Brown College’s first-ever student residences.

“The start of construction on the West Don Lands waterfront community is the first major step towards delivering the 2015 Games on-time and on-budget. The Athletes’ Village will provide an exceptional experience for athletes and bring long-lasting economic and social benefits to the community,” said Charles Sousa, Minister responsible for the Pan/Parapan Am Games and Minister of Citizenship and Immigration.

This project is expected to create 5,200 direct and indirect jobs.

The West Don Lands, located west of the Don River and north of the Canadian National Railway tracks, is a precinct of Waterfront Toronto, an agency funded by all three levels of government that oversees redevelopment of about 800 acres of brownfield space near the shore of Lake Ontario.

In 2015, more than 10,000 athletes, coaches and delegates from the Caribbean and Central, South and North America are scheduled to compete in 48 sports at more than 40 venues in 17 municipalities of the Greater Golden Horseshoe Region of central Ontario.
