The 360th and final washroom module for the Humber River Hospital project arrived on Christmas Eve.
Presented with a red ribbon to workers at the site, the washroom module marks the completion of one of the hopsital’s key features — its patient washrooms.
The washrooms for the 1.8-million-square-foot project were made using permanent modular construction (PMC), a building practice that has been rapidly becoming more popular in the industry.
“As inherent solution providers, our PCL team uses industry-leading virtual construction technology to identify elements of a construction project that can be prefabricated as modules of various sizes and complexity in a controlled factory environment,” said PCL Toronto executive vice-president Chris Gower.
PCL says PMC improves the productivity and efficiency of the construction process.
“Offsite modular construction creates the opportunity for components to be prepared offsite simultaneously with work being done onsite — all of which helps us save our clients both time and money,” said PCL vice-president of Permanent Modular Construction Mark Taylor.
The modules for the hospital project were fabricated in PCL’s 40,000-square-foot PMC production facility in Mississauga, Ont.
“By prefabricating data rooms in our production facility, electricians were able to complete the data system earlier, which was an early win for their critical path,” Taylor added.
