There were a total of 574 Canadian projects that received LEED certification in 2013, the highest in any prior years, according to the Canadian Green Building Council (CaGBC).
The total count for projects certified now sits at 1,484, along with 598 additional projects registered to pursue certification, bringing the total of registered and certified projects to 4,685.
Last year also set a record for LEED Gold certification, taking in 173 projects in 2013, as well as 32 LEED Platinum certified projects.
“It is also encouraging to see so many projects attaining the highest levels of LEED certification as it proves that the industry has the skills, knowledge and technology to produce high performance buildings at a reasonable cost and effort. LEED Gold and Platinum certification has become the standard in constructing or renovating large commercial office buildings. We look forward to 2014 and supporting Canada’s industry as it continues to innovate,” says Mark Hutchinson, Director of Green Building Programs for CaGBC.
Ontario led the pack with 221 certifications, Quebec, 121, British Columbia, 87 and Alberta with 78.
Some of the highlight projects of 2013 include the Nova Scotia Power Headquarter which received LEED Platinum certification, the LEED Platinum-certified Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability at the University of British Columbia and Oxford Properties’ MetroCentre in Toronto, which became the first multi-tenant office building to receive a second certification under LEED for Existing Buildings.
