NANISIVIK, NUNAVUT—Construction has started on the Nanisivik Naval Facility in Arctic Bay, Nunavut following preparation work at the site that was conducted in 2014.
Located along the north shores of Baffin Island, just south of the Northwest Passage, the facility will provide support to the Royal Canadian Navy, as well as other government vessels in the Arctic, a release from the federal government states, and will further protect Canadian sovereignty and interests in the north.
This project involves the construction of several structures, including new fuel storage tanks, buildings and other supporting infrastructure, as well as repairs to an existing deep water port.
The Nanisivik Naval Facility will operate as a docking and refuelling facility for the Royal Canadian Navy, and other government vessels, the release states. It will also ensure that the Canadian Armed Forces "continue to have the capacity to exercise control over Canada’s air and maritime approaches in the region."
A construction contract was awarded to Almiq Contracting Ltd. of Iqaluit in June 2014, and represents an investment of around $55.8 million. The project is expected to generate 50 to 60 job opportunities.
Built in 1973, the wharf has supported local commercial businesses and the needs of the nearby Hamlet of Arctic Bay. Repair work to the facility is required to ensure that it continues to meet operational requirements.
The Nanisivik Naval Facility will likely be operational in 2018.
