Horizon Utilities completes $4.8-million upgrade in St. Catharines

ST. CATHARINES, ONT. — Horizon Utilities Corporation has announced completion of the $4.8-million second phase of an infrastructure modernization project in St. Catharines, Ont.

The build, the second of three phases, will allow for the 2017 decommissioning of the four kilovolt Vine and Grantham substation to make way for a larger and more modern 13.8 kilovolt system, the Horizon Utilities media statement explained.

The upgrade called for the replacement of more than 24 kilometres of new overhead wires supported by 380 new poles and 110 new transformers. These improvements also included underground cable and overhead switches.

Horizon Utilities began the infrastructure upgrade in January with an expected completion date of late 2016. The utility has allocated nearly $38 million for capital projects in 2016, including $27 million earmarked for system renewal efforts.

Horizon Utilities provides electricity and related utility services to 245,000 customers in Hamilton and St. Catharines.
