MANITOBA — The governments of Canada and Manitoba have teamed up to provide $36 million in funding to support the development of the Smartpark Innovation Hub and the new Stanley Pauley Engineering Building at the University of Manitoba.
The Smartpark Innovation Hub will be an information exchange centre that will encourage further partnerships between industry, government and university; include new space for laboratories; provide rentable space for companies; and be home for the park’s North Forge incubator, states a Government of Manitoba release.
The funding will also support the construction of the Stanley Pauley Engineering Building, a new facility that will address the current rapid growth in engineering student enrolment and help to satisfy the existing market demand for trained engineers in all disciplines, the release states.
Of the $36-million investment, $32 million will come from the federal government, through the Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund, and $4 million from the Government of Manitoba.
"Investing in facilities that enable research and development in conjunction with the private sector is a priority for our government as we work to strengthen linkages between academic institutions and industry to address the workforce needs of our province, while better preparing students for the jobs of the future," said Ian Wishart, minister of education and training, in a statement. "By partnering with the University of Manitoba and the Government of Canada on this project, we are working to make Manitoba a better place to live, work and study on a global scale."
