Husky proposes to construct a wellhead platform that will consist of a concrete gravity structure in a purpose-built graving dock at the former U.S. Navy base at Argentia.

Husky Energy Inc. (TSX:HSE) of Calgary has registered for provincial environmental asssessment a proposed wellhead platform at Argentia, about 100 kilometres southwest of St. John’s, Newfoundland. It would be used for offshore oil extraction from the White Rose field in the of the Jeanne d’Arc Basin, about 350 kilometres east of St. John’s.

In a bulletin posted to the provincial website, the department stated that Husky Energy proposes to construct a wellhead platform that will consist of a concrete gravity structure in a purpose-built graving dock.

"The proposed graving dock will be excavated behind the natural coastal shoreline to a depth of approximately 20 metres below sea level."

The deadline for public comments for the project is September 12 and the minister’s decision is due September 21.

When construction is finished, the concrete gravity structure will be floated to a deepwater site in Placentia Bay where it will be mated with a topsides structure and then the well head platform will be towed to the White Rose oil field, the energy and conservation department stated.

"Support facilities will include a concrete batching plant, offices, a mess hall, a medical clinic, temporary sheds, lay down areas and storage areas,” the province stated.

Site work for construction of the graving dock is scheduled to begin in April 2013.

Argentia is a former U.S. Navy base on Placentia Bay.
