NIAGARA, Ont.—Three partners in a new Niagara wind farm gathered to mark the inauguration of the facility on June 15.

The Niagara Region Wind Farm, which is located on private land in the Regional Municipality of Niagara, was commissioned on Nov. 2, 2016 and consists of 77 Enercom E 101 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 230 megawatts.

The project has a 20-year power purchase agreement with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator and will power the equivalent of more than 76,000 homes per year throughout its operating life, notes a media statement.

Representatives of Enercom, the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation and Boralex were on hand to mark the launch.

"This project was signed, built and commissioned within two years as a result of outstanding teamwork, which fills me with pride," said Patrick Lemaire, president and CEO of Boralex, at the ceremony. "The acquisition of the project, which we completed in January, represents the largest transaction in Boralex’s history and has enabled us to raise our contracted capacity target to 2,000 megawatts by 2020."

The inauguration event was held on Global Wind Day, and included a public open house on the wind farm site.
