WARREN FREY - The 2017 CCA Innovation award went to Pomerleau, accepted by vice-president of Canadian building operations Eric Gaulin at the 100th annual Canadian Construction Association conference held in Banff, Alta.

BANFF, ALTA. – Construction industry leaders recently celebrated the best of their peers at a milestone gathering.

The Canadian Construction Association’s (CCA) annual awards were presented on March 14 at the CCA’s 100th annual conference held in Banff, Alta.

Awards are given out in the categories of both Excellence and Recognition.

In the Excellence category, the Person of the Year award went to Terry Brown of STBR consulting.

According to the CCA, Brown was honoured because he has served as a valuable mentor to his colleagues and has contributed “countless hours to association business regionally, provincially and nationally.”

The Excellence in Innovation went to Pomerleau, for creating a strong, innovative culture, the CCA states.

“The company recently became the first general contracting construction company in Canada to be certified with Level-1 building information modelling (BIM) proficiency in Canada, companywide,” the awards description reads. Pomerleau has internally developed BIM add-ons that are used to improve interoperability, to accelerate data extraction, and to generate useful information for various construction processes.”

Bird Construction and Maple Reinders won the Environmental Achievement award for successfully “implementing environmentally-sound practices into their Green Cart composting facility project with the City of Calgary,” the awards description states. It is the first Canadian public-private partnership compost project and is also on target to be the first LEED Gold V4 facility in Alberta.

Lystek International collected the International Business award and Groupe C. Laganiere Inc. won the National Safety award. The Partner Association award went to the Grand Valley Construction Association and Paul Seibel of ACL Steel was the winner of the Community Leader award.

The Gold Seal Association award went to the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Association.

Awards in the Recognition category were collected by Brendan Nobles of rcs construction for General Contractor category, Ross McLean of Houle Electric for Trade Contractor and EllisDon’s Gilbert Brulotte for Civil Infrastructure. The Manufacturers, Suppliers and Services award went to Glenn Ackerley of WeirFoulds.

“This year’s winners highlight the diverse membership – companies small and large, from different parts of the country, working in general contracting, trades and civil – that CCA represents. My congratulations to the winners – you are a source of inspiration for everyone in the industry,” CCA chair Chris McNally said in a statement.

Video of the awards ceremony, which was livestreamed over Facebook, is available at awards.cca-acc.com.
