Safety stalwart wins HHCA 2019 Young Leader Award

HAMILTON, ONT. — The Hamilton-Halton Construction Association (HHCA) has presented Gavin Oakes, a project manager with MTE Consultants, with this year’s Young Leader Award.

The award was presented at the association’s 99th Annual General Meeting and Dinner in February.

The Young Leader Award is presented to recipients under the age of 40 and employed by an HHCA member firm.

Oakes became involved with the HHCA Young Leaders Group (YLG) in 2015. In 2018, he took the lead on the YLG’s delivery of the HHCA’s Safety Week activities by organizing a team to participate in the Steps of Life fundraiser.

He also accepted an acting role in the HHCA’s first mock inquest, volunteering to be grilled by real lawyers in front of a large room of his peers, states a release issued by the association.

The YLG took steps to formalize its governance structure that same year and Oakes volunteered.

He currently holds the position of secretary.

After studying ecology at the University of Guelph and earning his Bachelor of Science, Oakes joined MTE Consultants as a technologist in 2008, where he found his passion for Industrial Hygiene Health and Safety.

He also holds a Graduate Certificate in Environmental Management and Assessment from Niagara College, a Certified Engineering Technologist designation and is a Certified Industrial Hygienist.

Oakes, along with members of his family, was on hand to accept the honour during the reception. He was quick to thank his parents and other members of the YLG for supporting his personal and professional goals.
