Province to invest $1.3B in highway revitalization

TORONTO—A $1.3-billion investment to rebuild and restore highway infrastructure across Ontario was recently announced by the provincial government.

The announcement, made by Minister of Transportation Jeff Yurek, confirms the government is planning to proceed with 123 rehabilitation projects across the province. The investment is expected to create jobs in the construction industry and make the transportation network in the province more safe and reliable.

The Ontario Road Builders’ Association (ORBA) was pleased with the announcement. ORBA members build many of the provincial and municipal roads, bridges and transportation infrastructure across the province, with the roadbuilding sector directly employing in excess of 30,000 workers at peak season, indicates a release issued by the Ministry of Transportation.

“The government’s commitment to transportation infrastructure funding supports the continued success of Ontario’s roadbuilding contractors who have strong, proven track records and close ties with local communities, as well as supporting the provincial tax base,” said ORBA president Steve Smith in a statement.

“With the announcement…contractors are able to plan their operations, hire staff, mobilize equipment and invest in supply chains and local economies across Ontario.”

“The announcement today helps us continue our work with the government on connecting and enhancing the productivity of communities, alleviating congestion, and enhancing the safety of everyone who uses Ontario’s transportation infrastructure,” said Bryan Hocking, COO of ORBA.
