CISC presents Krentz and Third with lifetime achievement awards

MARKHAM, ONT. — The Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) recently presented the 2020 CISC Alfred F. Wong Lifetime Achievement Awards.

This year’s honourees were recognized for a lifetime of dedication to the advancement of steel construction in Canada and their commitment to expanding the knowledge of the steel industry for the benefit of society, the steel construction industry and associated professions.

With 50 years of experience as an engineer in the steel and construction industries, Hugh Krentz has been instrumental in making Canadian buildings and bridges safer and developed more efficient, safe and sound building codes and standards which are now in use in Canada and around the world.

Krentz graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1957 and joined the CISC in 1960. He became chief engineer in 1964 and director of research and development of the Canadian Steel Construction Council in 1969. He was appointed secretary of the CISC in 1970 and secretary of the council a year later. In 1978 he was appointed as president of the CISC and retired in 2001 after 40 years of service. He continued to serve the industry in the capacity of consultant to CISC and executive director of the Steel Structures Education Foundation (SSEF), now the CISC Education and Research Council, until 2007.

In 2005, the CISC H.A. Krentz Research Award was created in appreciation of his contributions to the engineering profession, the development of codes and standards, the education of engineers and to the development of the Canadian steel industry, states a release.

In 2015, the Hugh A. Krentz Exemplary Student Award was established by the CWB Welding Foundation to support Canadian students entering their final year of study in a minimum two-year welding undergraduate program.

Robert Third was also named a recipient of the award. Third has over 45 years of experience within the steel construction industry in design, project management and construction, with proven manufacturing capabilities existing in-house at George Third and Son. Third’s industry connections have opened doors to facilitate joint venture partnerships with some of the largest steel fabricators in North America, the release states.

He is past chairman of the CISC, past member of the CISC board of directors, and past chairman of the SSEF where he was involved in supporting over 103 research projects at Canadian universities. He was also a past member of the board of directors for the Canadian Welding Bureau and past chair and honorary board member of the Endeavour Charity Society.
