SNC-Lavalin JV awarded $100M OPG contract

SNC-Lavalin JV awarded $100M OPG contract
OPG — The five-megawatt Calabogie Generating Station was extensively damaged by a tornado in 2018. The new facility will replace the original powerhouse with a new, higher-capacity powerhouse that will double its capacity.

MONTREAL — SNC-Lavalin has announced that its joint venture with M. Sullivan & Son has been awarded Phase 2 of the Calabogie Generating Station Redevelopment project in eastern Ontario by Ontario Power Generation (OPG).

The cost-reimbursable contract is valued at over $100 million with work to start this month and a targeted completion date of 2022, stated a June 22 release.

The contract is with SNCL Engineering Services. The work will involve decommissioning the existing 5-megawatt powerhouse, excavating the forebay and tailrace in line with the hydraulic model, and constructing a new two-unit powerhouse with a capacity of 10.7 megawatts, enough to power about 10,000 homes.

The joint venture has already completed the front-end engineering and design phase in which the it developed a plan for the execution phase through an options assessment and finalization of design.

Constructed in 1917, the Calabogie Generating Station, located south of Renfrew, produces power generated from the Madawaska River. The station was damaged by a tornado in the Ottawa-Gatineau region in September 2018 and prior to that, it was nearing the end of its operational life, the release explained.

“The redevelopment of OPG’s Calabogie Generating Station will see SNC-Lavalin apply its experience and best of class hydro expertise into one of OPG’s oldest and storied generating stations,” said Sebastien Mousseau, SNC-Lavalin’s vice-president responsible for power, grid and industrial. “Our combined effort with M. Sullivan & Son continues a successful power project partnership that OPG can count on to deliver a first-class modern outcome for a generating station with a century of history.”
