The economic plight of provinces like Alberta and COVID-19’s impacts are just some of the many topics that will be covered at Buildings Week, an online construction exhibition and conference, this month.

The first-ever Buildings Week, which features five days of online networking, programming and vendor browsing, is set to kickoff this month, taking place Nov. 30 to Dec. 4. With more than 120 educational seminars, virtual panels, technical presentations, keynote sessions and professional development workshops to choose from, here are some of the Daily Commercial News and Journal of Commerce’s top 10 recommendations.

Nov. 30 from 3 to 4 p.m. 

With the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement and a string of racist incidents in the Canadian construction industry, the issue of racism and prejudice is on the forefront of culture. This session aims to provide a discussion on the challenges the construction industry faces and the role leaders, managers and workers can play in combating the oppression of minorities on the jobsite.

Facing the Future: Challenges and Opportunities for the Affordable Housing Sector

Scaling up Deep Energy Retrofits through Prefabrication

Dec. 2 from 1 to 2:00 p.m.

To meet ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction goals, Canada is going to have to significantly improve building performance, including increasing retrofit projects. This session will dive into the rare practice of deep retrofits for building enclosures. The presenters believe that prefabrication off-site could reduce disruptions and increase scaling to boost the energy retrofit sector to where it needs to be.
