Ontario supports hurricane relief efforts

TORONTO — Premier Kathleen Wynne released a statement recently announcing relief efforts for people affected by Hurricane Irma

The Ontario government is contributing $150,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to help people in the Caribbean get back on their feet.

"With great concern, we continue to watch the disastrous effects of this event and know that it will be weeks, months and years before our friends in the Caribbean and U.S. are fully recovered," said Wynne. "Right now, our hope is for the safety and well-being of all those affected, as well as the safe return of Ontarians who were trapped in the storm’s path."

Wynne sent a letter to Florida Governor Rick Scott offering sympathies and support and has informed Canada’s federal government that Ontario stands ready to assist a Canadian response to the disaster, adds the statement.

"Irma and its consequences are a worst nightmare come true for millions of people," reads the statement.

As a result of the storm, millions of people were left without power. Toronto Hydro offered up resources to any utility in Florida that needed help on Sept. 9. Tampa Electric Company made a formal request for assistance a few days later and Toronto Hydro answered the call sending 28 employees and 15 trucks to help restore power in the Tampa area on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Hydro One has also offered up help and sent trucks.

EMS workers from Niagara, Ont. are also travelling to Saint Martin to help provide essential medical services.
