Flynn names Kelusky as new Ontario Chief Prevention Officer

TORONTO — The Ontario government has appointed Ron Kelusky as Ontario’s new Chief Prevention Officer (CPO), filling a position vacated when the first CPO George Gritziotis moved on to become registrar and CEO of the Ontario College of Trades.

Minister of Labour Kevin Flynn made the announcement at Queen’s Park March 7.

Prior to his appointment, Kelusky was the president and CEO of the Public Services Health and Safety Association and was responsible for health and safety issues for Ontario’s health care, education, government and First Nations sectors, said a media statement. His initiatives in that position included a system-wide review of violence in the health care sector and strategies for first responders experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Chief Prevention Officer oversees the Prevention Office within the Ministry of Labour. Duties include advocating across the province to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities, reporting to the Minister of Labour on Ontario’s occupational health and safety system and developing policy on provincial occupational health and safety strategies, said the statement.

Kelusky was previously with the Canadian Red Cross, serving as director general and the national executive lead for health programs, and he was also president of GestureTek Health, a health care technology startup.

The Daily Commercial News will have more on this announcement in an upcoming story.
