Enwave project allocated $10M from federal low-carbon fund

TORONTO — Federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna has announced that Enwave Energy Corporation is the first recipient of funding under the government’s new Low Carbon Economy Challenge’s Champions stream.

The government will contribute $10 million to Enwave’s winning project, which will enable an expansion of Enwave’s deep lake water cooling system.

The project draws cold water from Lake Ontario and uses it to cool hospitals as well as government, educational and highrise buildings in Toronto’s downtown core, said a Jan. 10 release.

The project can reduce the amount of energy needed to air-condition buildings by up to 80 per cent, said Enwave.

The statement said further projects from provincial and territorial governments, municipalities, Indigenous communities and organizations, businesses and not-for-profit organizations will be announced over the coming months.

“This funding is an investment in Toronto’s future. As Toronto grows over the next 20 years, Enwave is committed to making our city more resilient by providing innovative, sustainable heating and cooling in support of the city’s growth,” said Enwave Canada’s president and COO Carlyle Coutinho in the statement.
