Ontario funds Brantford construction skills program

BRANTFORD, ONT. — The Ontario government has announced it will spend $768,000 to help 60 unemployed jobseekers prepare for jobs in construction in the Brantford region.

The funding will support the SkillsAdvance Ontario project “Construct Your Career,” a skills training initiative of St. Leonard’s Community Services in co-operation with local employers intended to help overcome labour shortages, stated an Aug. 5 release. Construct Your Career will prepare participants for entry-level roles and help them transition to paid employment in the construction sector.

The program launches Aug. 31 and will include technical skills training, soft skills training and employment services to help trainees find a work placement and ultimately a job.

“As we reopen our economy, training and retraining are essential for the recovery of our province,” said Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development Monte McNaughton in a statement. “More businesses need skilled workers, and our government is helping employers train local workers and jobseekers through innovative training projects.”

St. Leonard’s Community Services will host a community event Aug. 12 to help promote the project and recruit participants. The community tool drive will collect tool donations, given that expensive tools can be a barrier for many potential trainees, the statement noted.
