Feds support Quebec City women’s shelter

Feds support Quebec City women’s shelter

QUEBEC CITY—The federal government has announced spending of $2.3 million on transitional housing with 13 bedrooms for women and children in need of shelter in Quebec City.

The project was initiated by the Quebec YWCA and involves purchasing and renovating a property to accommodate the shelter, stated a release.

The allocation comes from the Major Cities Stream under the Second Canada-Quebec Agreement signed as part of the government’s Rapid Housing Initiative.

The tenants may be eligible for rent support from the Societe d’habitation du Quebec’s Rent Supplement Program, which provides a subsidy of up to 75 per cent of a tenant’s rent.

“We are very pleased with this announcement, and we remain convinced that a single-sex rooming house will meet the needs of many women in the area. This is an interesting option for women who are waiting for housing or who do not want to live alone,” said Stephanie Lampron, acting general manager of the YWCA Quebec, in a statement.
