ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — The federal and Newfoundland and Labrador governments are spending $5.88 million in municipal infrastructure projects in the Avalon region through the Small Communities Fund.
The funding will contribute to cost-shared projects that improve water and wastewater systems, roads and community-oriented infrastructure in communities in the region, explains a release.
Through Budget 2018, the provincial government provided $18.8 million to leverage an additional $12.7 million in federal dollars from the fund for total project values of approximately $42.9 million.
The Avalon region projects represent 12 of 72 that the province is cost-sharing with the federal and municipal governments in 2018-19.
In addition to this funding, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Dwight Ball also announced a $138,000 investment in phase one of upgrades to the Conran’s Road watermain in Harbour Main-Chapel’s Cove-Lakeview. This funding is provided through the Budget 2018 commitment of $10.6 million to the provincial Municipal Capital Works Program.
The province is contributing to infrastructure projects in 48 communities, the release adds.
This initiative delivers on commitments in The Way Forward, a program to strengthen the province’s economic foundation and deliver better services and outcomes for residents, states a release.
“By investing in wastewater infrastructure and road improvements, the Government of Canada is supporting Canada’s ongoing transition to a clean, sustainable growth economy and creating well-paying middle class jobs,” said Avalon MP Ken McDonald in a statement.
