TORONTO — Walsh Canada has substantially completed the Etobicoke General Hospital Phase 1 Patient Tower project, a four-storey tower in Toronto scheduled to open in June.
The project was delivered through Infrastructure Ontario’s public-private partnership program in partnership with co-sponsor the William Osler Health System. The design-build-finance-maintain consortium consists of Etobicoke Healthcare Partnership LP as developer and equity sponsor, Brookfield Securities LP as financial adviser, Walsh Canada as design-builder, HDR Architecture as lead architect, and ENGIE Services as facility maintenance service provider. Final completion of the project is scheduled for the end of this year.
Construction of the new patient tower adds approximately 250,000 square feet to the existing facility with a state-of-the-art emergency department almost twice the size of the current space; a new critical care inpatient Unit combining intensive and cardiac care beds; larger, light-filled patient rooms that provide increased privacy and space to accommodate family members; a maternal newborn unit with a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for newborns who need extra care; and an ambulatory procedures unit featuring operating rooms, pre- and post-op preparatory and recovery areas, and several dedicated clinic spaces.
The project also included a new main entrance for the hospital, retail space, and expanded site works to improve accessibility and operational efficiencies across the campus, indicates a release issued by Walsh. The new patient tower was designed and constructed to achieve LEED Silver certification.
Walsh’s project team will continue working towards completing the remaining work, including 17,000 square feet of renovations on portions of the existing building that have connections with the newly constructed patient tower and exterior site work.
