Governments to spend $250M for rural Ontario broadband

Governments to spend $250M for rural Ontario broadband

TORONTO — The federal government and the Government of Ontario have announced they are spending $252 million to bring high-speed internet to 60,000 rural Ontario households in southwestern Ontario.

The spending is being undertaken as part of a joint federal-provincial agreement in which the governments have agreed to deliver high-speed internet access everywhere in the province by 2025, stated an Aug. 5 release.

In addition, the Canada Infrastructure Bank is assessing opportunities proposed through the Universal Broadband Fund to provide additional financing on a project-by-project basis toward the expansion of broadband in partnership with private and institutional investors.

The spending supplements a previous Ontario allocation of $14.7 million for 13 new projects under the Improving Connectivity for Ontario (ICON) program, providing 17,000 homes and businesses with access to high-speed internet

“Our latest investment to make high-speed internet accessible to more homes and businesses will make a positive difference in the lives of countless families and individuals in southwestern Ontario,” stated Ontario’s Minister of Infrastructure Kinga Surma in a statement.
