OTTAWA — Two university students have been awarded the 2017 Catherine Lalonde Memorial Scholarship by the Canadian Wood Council (CWC).
University of Toronto student Ivy Yi Liang and Laval University student Marzieh Ghiyasinasab received the award, which is presented to students who demonstrated academic excellence through research projects that will have positive influences on the structural wood products industry, indicates a release.
Liang was recognized for her Masters of Applied Science thesis that focuses on developing a modular timber-concrete composite system for short span highway bridges.
Ghiyasinasab was recognized for her doctoral research that aims to conduct a market and engineering analysis for the deployment of timber gridshell structures.
Established 14 years ago, the memorial scholarship is awarded yearly to graduate students whose wood research transcends the same level of passion that Catherine Lalonde championed relentlessly for the wood/wood products industry as a professional engineer and president of the CWC, adds the release.
“The winning scholarship recipients’ submissions exemplify the level of enthusiasm and expertise that Catherine Lalonde encouraged and inspired within our industry,” said Etienne Lalonde, VP of market development for the CWC, in a statement. “Her legacy lives on through initiatives such as the memorial scholarship and we are elated to celebrate and recognize future practitioners that share her passion for wood construction.”
