Walsh Canada recognized with occupational health and safety awards

TORONTO — For the second straight year, Walsh Canada has received two awards from Canadian Occupational Safety Magazine as part of Canada’s Safest Employers Awards, an annual competition that recognizes the country’s occupational health and safety leaders.

The company accepted the Silver Award for the Building and Construction category and the Silver Award for Young Worker Safety at a recent gala.

According to a release issued by Walsh, the Building and Construction Silver award recognizes the company’s continued excellence in managing a high performance health and safety program and culture.

It also takes into account a company’s leadership role in promoting health and safety across the industry through initiatives such as Safety Week, Safety Month, the League of Champions and the Safety Pass, and its efforts of engaging staff at all levels through various forms of positive reinforcement.

The Young Worker Silver award was presented to Walsh for its heightened focus on keeping its young workers safe, with its graduated Yellow Hard Hat program that visually identifies young workers from more experienced workers, the statement said.

The company has a Young Worker Mentoring Program, and a minimum ratio of experienced to young workers on project sites so that younger workers can be more closely monitored and influenced by the best practices of their peers, adds the release.

Walsh also supported industry-wide young worker initiatives that included MySafeWork and Courageous, while continuing its commitment to an annual bursary for George Brown College’s Construction and Engineering Technologies program named the Walsh Canada Bursary for Safety and Academic Excellence.
