TORONTO — Two Toronto coroners have announced inquests into deaths at construction sites that occurred in 2014 and 2011 respectively.
Dr. Bonnie Burke, regional supervising coroner for Central Region, Toronto East Office, announced on Jan. 21 that an inquest will be held in Toronto March 25 into the death of Michael Albert Lavigne.
Lavigne, 56, died on Sept. 9, 2014, from injuries sustained while working at a jobsite.
The inquest is expected to last four days and hear from approximately eight witnesses, noted a release.
Dr. Gautam Walia will preside as inquest coroner and Liesha Earle will be counsel to the coroner.
Also on Jan. 21, Dr. Roger Skinner, regional supervising coroner for Central Region, Toronto West Office, announced an inquest will be held into the death of Kyle Knox.
Knox, 24, died at a construction site on Oct. 11, 2011. The place and date of the inquest have not yet been announced.
Dr. Jennifer Tang will preside as inquest coroner and Tom Schneider will be counsel to the coroner.
An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act in those circumstances, noted the release.
The inquests will examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths.
