Three inquests into construction site deaths announced

TORONTO — Dr. Kenneth Peckham, regional supervising coroner for central region, Central West Office, announced two dates have been scheduled for inquests into construction site deaths in Brampton, Ont.

Mark Attallah, 40, died on April 21, 2015, on a construction site in Brampton. Richard Reid, 60, died on August 9, 2016, while working at a construction site in Brampton.

The inquests are mandatory under the Coroners Act and will examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths, indicates a release, adding the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths.

The inquest into Reid’s death is expected to last four days and hear from approximately eight witnesses. It will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Dr. Mara Goldstein will preside as inquest coroner and Shanna Ferrone will be counsel to the coroner.

The inquest for Atallah is expected to last three days and hear from approximately eight witnesses. It will start at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 25. Dr. Geoffrey Bond will preside as inquest coroner and Ikdeep Singh will be counsel to the coroner.

Both inquests will held at the Brampton Provincial Offences Court, located at 5 Ray Lawson Blvd. in Brampton.

Dr. Joel Kirsh, regional supervising coroner for central region, Central East Office, announced that an inquest will be held into the death of Nelson Ferreira, 44, who died on May 21, 2015, while working at a construction site in Markham, Ont.

Details regarding the date and location will be provided at a later date when the information becomes available. Dr. John Carlisle will preside as inquest coroner and Tony Vanden Ende will be counsel to the coroner.
