SUDBURY, ONT. – A mining company says 39 workers who’ve been trapped underground near Sudbury, Ont., since yesterday are now slowly on their way out.
Vale says no one has been injured at the Totten Mine and all the trapped workers are expected to reach the surface by tonight.
The company says there was an “incident” in the shaft of the mine yesterday afternoon.
It says the conveyance system used to transport employees to and from the surface was shut down as a result.
Vale says the workers have access to food, water and medicine.
The company says the trapped miners are using a ladder system to reach the surface, with support from the company’s rescue team.
