CCOHS announces list of scholarship winners

HAMILTON, ONT. — The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) has announced the winners of the 2019 Dick Martin Scholarship Award.

Nancy Suranyi of Alberta and Evan Hrycenko of Saskatchewan will receive $3,000. In addition, their respective academic institutions, the University of Alberta and the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), will each receive $500.

Scholarship winners are selected by a panel of technical specialists based on criteria that include submitting an essay on injury prevention or research on a particular hazard and risk, indicates a release issued by CCOHS.

The award is presented to post-secondary students enrolled either in a full-time or part-time program leading to an occupational health and safety certificate, diploma or degree from an accredited Canadian college or university. The scholarships are intended to support interest in and encourage the pursuit of, careers in the field of occupational health and safety.

“This scholarship award is an opportunity for students to showcase their passion and commitment to workplace safety,” said Anne Tennier, president and CEO of the CCOHS, in a statement. “I congratulate both Nancy and Evan on their achievement and wish them well as they begin their careers in occupational health and safety.”

The Dick Martin Scholarship Award fund was established by the CCOHS Council of Governors in 2002 in the memory of Dick Martin, a past Governor on the CCOHS Council and a pioneer of workplace health and safety in Canada, adds the release.
