EllisDon team awarded courthouse contract

TORONTO — Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and the Ministry of the Attorney General announced they have selected EllisDon Infrastructure to design, build, finance and maintain the Toronto courthouse project.

The EllisDon Infrastructure team includes EllisDon Capital Inc. as developer, EllisDon Design Build Inc. undertaking construction, Renzo Piano Building Workshop and NORR Limited as designers, EllisDon Facilities Services Inc. and SNC-Lavalin O&M responsible for facilities management and EllisDon Capital Inc. as the financial advisor.

A statement said the next step in the process will be reaching final agreements on contracts, setting a financing rate and announcing the cost of the contract.

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2018. The new courthouse will be located at 10 Armoury St., bordered by Centre Avenue and Chestnut Street.

The new courthouse represents an amalgamation of many of Toronto’s existing courthouse facilities, the statement indicated. It will include a single point of entry with magnetometers, baggage scanners, continuous video surveillance and separate corridors intended to ensure security, and video conferencing facilities. Among the goals noted is ensuring the province’s real estate portfolio is sustainable, accessible and efficient.

In 2015, the statement said, IO led an archeological excavation of the site that recovered numerous artifacts, mainly from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and so a program of artwork on construction fencing has been developed to help recognize the site’s cultural history.

IO said the courthouse will be designed to meet LEED Silver with a focus on energy efficiency, healthy indoor environments and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
