TORONTO — The Ontario government has announced support for Columbia Forest Products to expand its plywood mills in Hearst and Rutherglen in northern Ontario.
Columbia Forest Products is one of North America’s largest manufacturers of hardwood plywood and hardwood veneer products, said a recent statement. The funding will help to create and maintain approximately 350 jobs.
The funding comes from Ontario’s Jobs and Prosperity Fund. Columbia will spend the allocation on modernizing its infrastructure and purchasing new equipment to improve production capacity, the statement indicated.
“A respectful working relationship between the Ontario government, our union partners and Columbia’s leadership team in Ontario continues to strengthen as evidenced by the ongoing expansion and modernization of Columbia’s Ontario hardwood plywood and veneer operations,” commented Gary Gillespie, a Columbia executive vice-president, in the statement, adding it’s “a positive case study that witnesses complementary organizations working together to build a solid future for Columbia’s dedicated Ontario team members.”
