Partial demolition of Magee House ordered in Ottawa

OTTAWA — The City of Ottawa recently took immediate action to demolish a portion of Magee House, a heritage building at 1119 Wellington St. W.

A partial collapse occurred at the building on July 24, prompting emergency work to remove the most unsafe elements of the remaining structure, a release from the city explains.

Priestly Demolition was contacted to remove the southwest corner of the building and a portion of the roof, which took place July 27.

The city plans to have experts conduct further analysis of the building.

John Cooke and Associates, the engineering firm that assessed the structure following the collapse, supervised the work.

The engineering report recommended the emergency demolition to allow for a more thorough assessment of the remaining building after the dangerous portions are removed. City staff are working with the property owner to determine a course of action for the remaining structure, a release explains.

While demolition work usually requires a heritage permit and the approval of city council, because the structure posed a significant public hazard, the chief building official issued the emergency order to demolish, meaning no heritage permit was needed.

During a recent Built Heritage sub-committee meeting on Aug. 2, an update was given from Building Code Services. The owner has been ordered to have any other demolition or long-term stabilization work undertaken by Aug. 20.

The timeline could be revised depending on discussions with the owner, city representatives mentioned.
