The Chartwell Retirement Residences headquarters will be the first commercial building in Mississauga, Ont. to use the BubbleDeck system. The technology links air, steel and concrete in a two-way structural slab using hollow balls (bubbles) made of recycled plastic from kayaks and held in place by reinforcing steel. BubbleDeck helps to alleviate weight in the middle of the slab between the columns by creating a “concrete honeycomb.” The project manager on the build is Maple Reinders, the architect is Sweeny &Co. Architects and the structural engineer is Blackwell.
