Coronation Park redesign honours First World War

DCN News Services

TORONTO — Toronto’s Coronation Park on the waterfront is being restored to its original design as a permanent memorial to Canada and the city’s war effort.

According to a City of Toronto release, the space is “possibly the largest First World War memorial in Toronto.”

The first stage of the redesign will be completed Nov. 10 and will be celebrated through a re-dedication ceremony from 10:30 to noon.

Coronation Park was opened to commemorate King George VI’s coronation on May 12, 1937.

The trees planted in the park commemorate the service and sacrifice of Canada’s military forces, principally those from the First World War.

Approximately 144 trees were planted, which was the largest tree planting of its kind in Canada at the time.

Each tree was ceremonially placed by veterans of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, the release reads.
