New Huron County OPP detachment breaks ground

CLINTON, ONT. — A groundbreaking was held recently at the construction site of the new Huron County Ontario Provincial (OPP) detachment in Clinton, Ont.

As part of a $182 million investment announced earlier this year to replace aging OPP facilities, the construction of the detachment in Clinton is underway with substantial completion expected in late 2020.

The government is investing $20 million to build the new detachment.

The Huron County detachment is one of nine included in the OPP Modernization — Phase 2 project that will eventually replace some aging facilities that are at the end of their useful lifespan and no longer meet the requirements of modern police operations, states a release issued by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

Earlier this year it was announced that Bird Construction Inc. had been selected as the preferred proponent for the Phase 2 project to design, build and finance the nine detachments.

Phase 2 of the modernization is being delivered through Infrastructure Ontario’s public-private partnership model.

The Clinton detachment will provide space and infrastructure that support changing technology requirements, spacious and secure evidence vaults, six holding cells as well as CCTV and other advanced security features, the release indicates.

The building will be fully accessible and is designed to meet the LEED Silver Standard.
