Feds fund $22M Hamilton YWCA housing project

HAMILTON, ONT.—The federal government has announced $27.6 million in funding for three housing projects in Hamilton.

The recent announcement included a federal allocation of $10.08 million for the construction of 50 units at the YWCA Hamilton Ottawa Street Redevelopment located in Hamilton.

The spending is being undertaken under the federal National Housing Co-Investment Fund, part of the National Housing Strategy, said a release. Funding partners are the Province of Ontario and the City of Hamilton. The YWCA project will provide housing for 35 women and women-led families and another 15 units will be geared towards women with developmental disabilities.

The facility will be built on the site of the former Ottawa Street YWCA. Non-residential space at the YWCA will be used for programming and services to the tenants and the community, the release indicated. Thirty-five units will be classified as affordable with rent representing less than 75 per cent of the median market rent.

The projected construction cost of the YWCA Hamilton Ottawa Street Redevelopment is $22.2 million. The facility will have a Passive House design, targeting energy savings of 75 per cent and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of more than 25 per cent compared to the National Energy Code for Buildings in 2015.

“We are thrilled to realize our vision of safe, affordable housing for women, girls and families on Ottawa Street. Housing is a starting point for women to move forward. And thanks to this commitment by the federal government, we are able to provide women with a foundation that is necessary for them to succeed,” said Denise Christopherson, CEO of YWCA Hamilton, in the release.
