Feds support Montreal social housing project

MONTREAL — The federal government has announced funding of more than $12.8 million towards the construction of the $16.3-million Premiere Porte social housing project to be built in the Ahuntsic-Cartierville neighbourhood of Montreal.

The spending is part of the National Housing Co-Investment Fund program announced by the federal government last May, said a Jan. 22 statement.

The Caisse d’economie solidaire Desjardins is also supporting the 78-unit Premiere Port project. The developer is the Societe de Gestion Querbes and the goal is to provide housing for families and new Canadians in addition to support services for new Canadians, indicated the release. The services will be offered in partnership with the Regroupement R.O.M.E.L.

The project is part of a package of three social housing projects for Montreal to be supported by total federal spending of $27.6 million.

All units and common areas at Premiere Porte will be accessible through universal design and 17 units will be fully accessible. At least 24 units will be affordable and will have a rent representing 80 per cent of the median market rent.

“If integration is the key to participation in society and fulfilment, housing is the key to integration,” said Mazen Houdeib, general manager of R.O.M.E.L. and the Societe de Gestion Querbes, in the statement.

“With regard to R.O.M.E.L., it is a dream that will come true thanks to this support, the dream of being able to welcome newcomers in healthy and affordable housing and give them the opportunity to embark on their integration process on a solid foundation.”
