Investments made in Hay River fish plant and bridge projects

HAY RIVER, N.W.T. — The governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories are providing more than $8.8 million in joint funding to support the construction a new 1,600-square-metre Hay River Fish Plant in Hay River, N.W.T.

The project includes the construction of the building, cold storage, loading docks, parking and driveways. The plant would process approximately 1.4 million kilograms of locally caught fish into a variety of products for both sale and export.

The federal government is spending up to $6.6 million through the Investing in Canada Plan and the Government of the N.W.T. is contributing approximately $2.2 million and will fund the remainder of the project, states a release issued by Infrastructure Canada.

The feds previously contributed $1.45 million for processing equipment, design and site planning of the facility through the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency’s Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development program.

In addition to the fish plant, the governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories also announced funding and the start of construction for the Hay River to Pine Point Bridge. Funding for the project is part of the Northwest Territories Highway Improvement Initiative.

The updated bridge will have a higher load capacity for industrial vehicles, making it easier to transport goods and deliver services in the community, the release indicates. Construction is expected to be completed by fall 2019 and will create between 15 and 20 new jobs.

“Investments in infrastructure are critical to growing and diversifying our economy,” said Wally Schumann, Northwest Territories minister of infrastructure and minister of industry, tourism and investment, in a statement. “This includes investments in buildings like the Hay River Fish Plant but also in transportation infrastructure like the Pine Point Bridge that connect our territories to markets and our people to opportunities.”
