Feds invest in new Canadian Canoe Museum facility
CANADIAN CANOE MUSEUM — The federal government is investing $10 million to build the new Canadian Canoe Museum facility located on the Trent-Severn Waterway in Peterborough, Ont. It will house the museum’s entire collection, offer modular programming space and allow for paddling activities on the waterway.

PETERBOROUGH, ONT. — The Government of Canada is investing $10 million to support the construction of a new facility for the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough, Ont.

The new museum will be located on a Parks Canada site adjacent to the Peterborough Lift Lock National Historic Site on the Trent-Severn Waterway, indicates a government release, adding it will house the museum’s entire collection, offer modular programming space and allow for paddling activities on the waterway.

The government is providing funds to the museum through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund which supports renovation and construction projects, the acquisition of specialized equipment and feasibility studies related to cultural spaces.

Two years ago, Canada Cultural Spaces Fund support allowed the board to proceed with the pre-construction phase of the new museum.

“Today’s announcement marks a significant milestone for the Canadian Canoe Museum and its deep-rooted partnerships with Peterborough–Kawartha residents, community leaders and First Nations communities,” said Maryam Monsef, minister of international development and for women and gender equality and MP for Peterborough–Kawartha.

“By investing in the museum’s revitalization project, our government is supporting a project that is expected to create more than 1,000 new, well-paying jobs, generate more than $111 million in economic activity and support the creation of an innovative, environmentally conscious facility. This funding also ensures the museum will continue supporting reconciliation efforts and Canadian heritage.”
