Students present submissions for National Steel Bridge Competition this weekend

Students present submissions for National Steel Bridge Competition this weekend

MARKHAM, ONT.—The Canadian National Steel Bridge Competition 2021 virtual event, presentations and awards ceremony will take place this Saturday, May 15.

The competition, organized by the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction, aims to recognize young students in civil engineering who have an interest in the field of study of steel bridges.

Attendees will be able to meet the teams and hear their presentations from 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. (EDT) and the awards ceremony will take place from 4 to 4:30 p.m.

The goal of the competition is to encourage innovation; strengthen knowledge with a practical project; develop interpersonal and professional skills; and to create relationships between students and industry.

Students are expected to use ingenuity throughout the year to develop their project, indicates a release. As part of the project, students design, build and assemble a structure to present a prototype of a dimension of about 23 feet by five feet. Teams will be evaluated on multiple criteria such as the speed of assembly of the structure, the efficiency of the latter and the architectural aspect.

“This virtual format of the competition will empower students to acquire, demonstrate and value the knowledge and skills that they will use as the future generation of professional civil engineers,” states a CISC release. “This competition challenges intercollegiate competition that supplements their education with a comprehensive, student-driven project experience from conception and design through fabrication, erection and testing, culminating in a steel structure that meets client specifications and optimizes performance and economy.”

The event will be broadcasted live via Twitch at the link here: https://www.twitch.tv/cnsbc2021
