Supportive housing units to be constructed in St. Thomas

ST. THOMAS, ONT. — Twenty supportive housing units will be built in St. Thomas, Ont.

The provincial government is providing $3 million to help build the four-storey, 45 one-bedroom apartment building located at 16 Queen St. It will contain commercial and program space on the ground floor including a laundry room, nurse station, kitchen and bike storage with three floors of residential units above. There is also a fire station on the ground floor and the building is being built to the highest energy standards.

The units are expected to be occupied by December 2023 and will be located close to public transportation, schools, parks, grocery stores, pharmacies and employment opportunities.

The funding is being delivered through the Social Services Relief Fund which has provided $1 billion in support throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to help municipalities and Indigenous program partners create longer-term housing solutions and help vulnerable Ontarians, including those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, states a release.
